Following the foot steps of Samsung and Sony; ZTE a Chinese manufacturer of telecoms products is planning to launch a smartwatch in the first quater of 2014. While the former two have their devices selling at exorbitant price point in the market, ZTE’s device will roll out at wallet-friendly pricing to surpass the leaders.

Lu Qianhao, ZTE’s head of handset marketing strategy said in an exclusive interview to The Wall Street Journal that the company plans to release a smartwatch with features akin to Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, he added that the device is in-expensive too.

The manufacturer plans to release it first in China in the first quarter of 2014 and, then will look forward to launch it in the US and Euro destinations. It is anticipated to hit the shelves in second quarter of next year.

According to company sources, the smartwatch will be compatible with ZTE smartphones however, later ones are expected to come supporting handsets made by other manufacturers.

The device is deliberately made to match with Android running smartphones.

The world’s fifth-largest telecom equipment maker ZTE is aimed at tapping the wearable computing sector in the near future – smartglasses, health-centric smartphone – connected shoes are some of its plans in the pipe line.

The smartwatch race is likely to get intense as other major players such as Apple, Google and LG are also gearing up with their own versions. The year 2014 will see more versions of  smartwatch flowing in to the market.

Currently, Sony’s SmartWatch 2 is priced at Rs 14,990 and the Samsung Galaxy Gear at Rs 23,000.

By far, it is only Samsung and Sony that have officially launched smartphones, while Samsung says it has sold out 8,00,000 units Sony hasn’t disclosed any information on the sales number.

As mentioned above next year will witness the surge of smartwatches in the market !
