Just before the last week of October Microsoft started shipping Microsoft Surface 2 tablets. The second generation is coming inducted with new hardware and new look. The price point of the latest entrant is sure allure buyers from the trending Apple iPad Air.

As for the Apple product – in manufacturer’s own words it is the greatest tablet ever. This time they have a light and thin design in place clubbed with fast and smooth performance.

Design & Build

The Surface 2 tablet is bigger, lot heavier and uses the same magnesium alloy (VaporMg) found in the previous model. It has a built-in kickstand which can be used for two different angles. It’s dimensions measure 10.81 x 6.79 x 0.35 inches.

Surface comes in two colors namely Silver and Black.

The iPad Air has a stylish aluminum back and the cellular version has plastic cutout to allow for better reception. The dimensions measure 9.4 x 6.6 x 0.29 inches.

The iPad comes in three colors namely Space Gray, Black Silver and White.

Size & Weight

According to Apple, the iPad Air slate is the thinnest, lightest, most powerful iPad yet. It is much smaller tablet compared to Surface – shorter by 13% and thinner by 16%.

The iPad Air is a feather weight device, the Wi-Fi version weighs 469gms and the Cellular version weighs 478gms however, Surface weighs 676 gms.

Keyboard Covers

Microsoft Surface 2 comes with keyboard cover but the Apple iPad Air you will need to check for thrid party covers. It is Logitech and Belkin that have made official announcements to bring out keyboard covers for Apple.

On the winning note Surface covers have trackpads with mouse support inputs but iPad has none.


Microsoft Surface 2 tablet sports a 10.6 inches screen with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution power. Apple iPad Air has 9.7 inches screen with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolutiion power.

On the size front Surface leads but on the resolution side iPad wins. In the laptop mode Surface best-fits for viewing from distance however, the Retina display will look great when used as a tablet.

Processor, Storage & Software

Microsoft Surface 2 has Nvidia Tegra 4 paired to 2GB RAM. The Apple iPad Air has Apple A7 paired to 1GB RAM.

Surafce has 32GB and 64GB storage options with microSD support. Apple iPad Air has 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage variants and no microSD option.

The Surface 2 comes loaded with RT version of Microsoft Office, it looks and functions similar to that of desktop equivalent. Apple’s iOS version of the iWork suite is included in the iPad and notabley has gone free for the first time.

Final Verdict

Both the tablets are equally good but the iPad Air leads with the sharper tablet display, A7 processor and other specs. For many reasons Apple iPad Air can turn out to be a better buy.
