The wait is over! Microsoft officially launched the much anticipated Operating System Windows 8 in an event held at New York on Oct 25th. All PC partners including Dell, Acer, Samsung, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony and HP were present at the release. It should have been a proud moment for the Microsoft team to introduce the first touch optimized OS. The software is available on sale from Friday Oct 26th.

Speaking at the event Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft sounded confident by saying 670 million Pcs just waiting to be upgraded to Windows 8, and went on to refer the analyst projections to sell 400 million new Pcs. Xbox music, video and games are some of the streaming services that will be available with Windows 8.

Ballmer who holds maximum number of shares in Microsoft next to Bill Gates is betting big on Windows 8 software. As a matter of fact, Microsoft is aiming to reclaim the OS era for PCs. The roll out goes in 37 languages to 140 worldwide markets. The high-end Microsoft Surface Tablet powered by Windows RT is also going out on sale from October 26th.

Windows 8 looks modern with tiles, colors and new features; it’s a specific design for Ultra-books, PCs, Tablets and Hybrid devices. For the first time, Microsoft is betting big on touch interface to prove it has the marketing muscles to shape the future of computing. Touch interface can be experienced on touch screen computers and responds to mouse and keyboard on any PC. Win 8 can be accommodated on the same hardware that powered Windows 7.

Old windows users who currently run Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 purchased anytime between 2nd June 2012 and 31st January 2013 can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro without buying the complete software pack. It is also available for download at an estimated price of RS1,999 and the DVD version costs at RS 3,499. The offer stands valid till January 31st 2013, after which the OS is expected to be priced above RS11,000. Apart from this, Windows 7 PCs bought between June 2, 2012, and January 31, 2013, are also eligible to get a Windows 8 Pro update for an estimated price of  RS 699.
