Mar 25, 13 Apple Acquires WiFiSLAM

The Cupertino based smartphone manufacturer Apple Inc has acquired WiFiSLAM for $20 million in a move to gain more prominence in it’s maps service.

For a longtime now, Apple is struggling to set a strong foothold in mapping; the acqusition is a clear-cut indicator to improve the maps service on its devices.

The terms of acquisition aren’t revelead yet, but WiFiSLAM will Apple to create indoor maps.

According to Wall Street Journal on the acquistion, “ Apple recently acquired WiFiSLAM for approximately $20 million. The company specializes in a technology that allows mobile apps to pinpoint users’ locations through the interaction between their smartphones and standard Wi-Fi signals – no GPS need apply.”

Since the acquisition, WiFiSLAM’s official website went offline but previously it read, “Allow your smartphone to pinpoint its location (and the location of your friends) in real-time to 2.5m accuracy using only ambient WiFi signals that are already present in buildings. We are building the next generation of location-based mobile apps that, for the first time, engage with users at the scale that personal interaction actually takes place. Applications range from step-by-step indoor navigation, to product-level retail customer engagement, to proximity-based social networking.”

Going by this, we can expect to see Apple applications coming packed with robust indoor maps. Google already a lead player in mapping is less a contentender to Apple for now. But Apple forsees to turn the tables in maps service!
